Now in effect, regulatory amendments now allow qualified pharmacists to prescribe some drugs, working in close collaboration with your doctor. This is known as Prescriptive Authority. Your pharmacist may be able to prescribe drugs in certain circumstances, such as:
- When you need an emergency supply; and
- If your pharmacist believes a minor condition can be better treated with a prescription rather than an over-the-counter medicine.
The new amendments to grant Prescriptive Authority recognize the extensive drug knowledge of Saskatchewan pharmacists and their essential role in health care. It is part of the overall goal to encourage collaboration between you, your physician and your pharmacist – your Partners in Prescribing.
